چکیده

Though it has been claimed that elitism could improve evolutionary multi-objective search significantly, a thorough and extensive evaluation of its effects is still missing. Guidelines on how elitism could successfully be incorporated have not yet been developed. This paper presents a unified model of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, in which arbitrary variation and selection operators can be combined as building blocks, including archiving and re-insertion strategies. The presented model enables most specific multi-objective (evolutionary) algorithm to be formulated as an instance of it, which will be demonstrated by simple examples. We will further show how elitism can be quantified by the model’s parameters and how this allows an easy evaluation of the effect of elitism on different algorithms.

On the Effects of Archiving, Elitism, and Density Based Selection in Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimization

This paper studies the influence of what are recognized as key issues in evolutionary multi-objective optimization: archiving (to keep track of the current non-dominated solutions), elitism (to let the archived solutions take part in the search process), and diversity maintenance (through density dependent selection). Many proposed algorithms use these concepts in different ways, but a common f...

Pareto-based Multi-criteria Evolutionary Algorithm for Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem with Sequence-dependent Setup Times

This paper addresses an unrelated multi-machine scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup time, release date and processing set restriction to minimize the sum of weighted earliness/tardiness penalties and the sum of completion times, which is known to be NP-hard. A Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model is proposed to formulate the considered multi-criteria problem. Also, to solve the mo...

The Role of Elitism in Multiobjective Optimization with Evolutionary Algorithms

This paper studies the influence of elitism in Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization. The true efficiency of inserting elitism in these algorithms was not yet sufficiently developed. Many algorithms for multiobjective optimization use different methods to keep the best individuals (the elite) founded on the duration of the search process. The problem is how this elitism can be preserved and,...

Multi-objective Design Space Exploration of Road Trains with Evolutionary Algorithms

This paper examines the road train concept as a new alternative in long-distance freight traffic. The design of such a system is a difficult task since many different and conflicting criteria arise depending on the application spectrum, the legal conditions and the preferences of the carrier. Furthermore the evaluation of each decision alternative relies on a time consuming and sophisticated si...

An Approach to Reducing Overfitting in FCM with Evolutionary Optimization

Fuzzy clustering methods are conveniently employed in constructing a fuzzy model of a system, but they need to tune some parameters. In this research, FCM is chosen for fuzzy clustering. Parameters such as the number of clusters and the value of fuzzifier significantly influence the extent of generalization of the fuzzy model. These two parameters require tuning to reduce the overfitting in the...
